Abstract
The concentration of total carbon dioxide in sea water has been determined to a precision of ±0·15% standard deviation and an accuracy of about ±0·2% by a new method which employs a vacuum extraction and infra-red analysis. A comparison of extractions made on shipboard and extractions made later in the shore laboratory on preserved samples show that ocean water sterilized with 100 ppm of mercuric chloride does not change its total carbon dioxide on storage in stoppered Pyrex bottles at room temperature for a period up to 3 months.
