    The life cycle of Petalonia fascia was studied in a tide pool along the coast of the Oosterschelde. The periods of presence and fertility of blades and the crustose microthallus were recorded. Besides, in culture the influence of temperature and photoperiod on the ratio between macro-and microthallus and on the rate of development was investigated. High temperature stimulates the formation of crustose young plants, while at low temperature almost only filamentous plantlets arise from the swarmers. The amount of crustose young plants, developing under long day conditions, is somewhat larger than under short day photoperiods. Short day conditions favour the production of blades, when temperature rises above 20°C however, no normal blades will be formed. The results of culture experiments are compared with observations in the field.
