Abstract
    In inland navigation the vessels always operate under shallow water conditions and very often also in close proximity of banks and walls. Manoeuvring near a wall means motion with drift angles and the question arises, whether there is an interaction between drift forces and moments and the wall effect.

    Detailed model tests have been carried out with the model of an inland waterway ship in the large shallow water towing tank of the DST. Within close proximity of the tank wall captive tests were conducted varying the distance from the wall, the drift angle and the speed of the model.

    During the analysis of the forces and moments acting on the model the effect of a wall onto the vessel moving parallel and the effect of a drift angle on the ship moving without wall effect are both subtracted from the measured data. The remaining forces and moments are used to determine the coupling terms of the combination of wall and drift effect. It is incorporated in numerical calculation models to improve the consideration of wall effects e.g. in simulations, for the reliable survey of accidents or for assessing the safety of ships and fairways.
