Abstract
In the lugworm Arenicola marina L. the amounts of glycogen and total lipids in muscle and trunk gut were determined in groups of small and large specimens, that were also supposed to differ in age. A distinct relation was found between a sudden decrease of the glycogen content in these tissues, and the proliferation of the gametogonia in the gonad and the subsequent appearence of the gametes in the coelom. No relation was apparent between the total lipids and the reproductive cycle. In young worms an extremely high glycogen content was found in the trunk gut as compared with muscle. It is supposed that this extra energy reserve might be an adaptation enabling the young worms to stay in higher parts of the flats than old worms do, by bridging longer times of emergence by anaerobic metabolism.
