Abstract
    The osmotic and ionic regulation responses in blood, bile, muscle and liver tissue were measured of three Pleuronectus species at various salinities at low (5°C) and high (20°C) temperature. All three species showed strong stabilization of their internal concentrations. P. limanda, however, did not survive salinities less than about 5‰ S, neither could this species withstand a gradual increase in temperature to 20°C. Deviations of the normal level were found in P. platessa at extreme salinities, especially at low temperature. This species also showed a slight negative influence of temperature on the osmotic concentration of the blood, caused by an increase in organic-solute concentration at lower temperature. Bile fluid is almost isotonic or slightly hypotonic to the blood ; intracellular osmotic concentrations in muscle and liver tissue appear to be slightly hypertonic to the blood. Ion composition of blood, bile and intracellular fluids are strongly different to each other, but no interspecific differences could be detected, except in the Mg content of the blood of P. platessa which is relatively low compared to the two other species. Interspecific differences in osmotic and ionic regulation responses seemed to be confined to blood composition at extreme salinities, suggesting identical osmotic and ionic requirements for the three species, which can be met in different salinity-ranges. Comparison of the three species confirms that, also in vertebrates, the highest stability of internal concentrations to variation in temperature and salinity is reached in the least marine species.
