Abstract
From observations of drift-net catches, in which the side of the net where the fish was caught, was recorded, the conclusion is drawn that herring shows directed movements during the night. In the Southern Bight during the autumn migration, these movements were in a south-southwesterly direction. In the central North Sea, in September, a directed movement to the east-northeast could be recognized. The strongest orientation was found for the full herring in the Southern Bight and for the spents in the central North Sea, in agreement with expectations. Pilchards in the Southern Bight showed a direction towards south in autumn, but in whiting, a resident species of the area, no directed movement could be observed. No indications were obtained on the mechanism used for orientation. The navigation of herring in the Southern Bight appears to be independent of the tidal phase.
