Abstract |
Barium is desorbed from the suspended sediments of the Zaire during mixing of the fresh water plume with the ocean. The result is a pronounced maximum in the barium-salinity plot at 2‰ S. At higher salinities, the behaviour is conservative. The flux of dissolved barium is increased by 25% over the value for the river end-member. Similar behaviour is observed in the Amazon and also in the Mississippi (Hanor & Chan, 1977). |
