Abstract
    Aspects of anaerobic metabolism in Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk from the Bay of Naples in the Mediterranean were investigated. No Pasteur effect could be demonstrated. Accumulation of succinate during anaerobiosis is linear with course of time. ATP concentrations in the tissues decreased in the first 24 hours of anaerobiosis till 80% of the aerobic value, and remained at that level during the next 4 days. Mortality in M. galloprovincialis in air was rather high. When subjected to artificial periods of emersion, it appeared that succinate accumulation during 24 hours thereafter was increased. The results indicate a lower capacity for anaerobiosis in Mytilus galloprovincialis, compared with literature data for Mytilus edulis. This difference was related to the sublittoral way of life of the species in the Mediterranean.
