Abstract
Earlier results relating to the numbers of radially and non-radially directed photographic recordings of Talitrus saltator, obtained in tests on non-visual orientation, are shown to be consistent with the recordings of other investigators. The hypothesis that the radially directed recordings were obtained from jumping animals receives further support, in that (1) the percentages of radially directed recordings and of jumping animals are nearly equal and (2) the distribution of the individual mean orientation directions of jumpers is significantly different from uniform, as was the distribution of radially directed recordings obtained earlier. Similar correspondences are found for the crawling individuals and the non-radially directed recordings. It is shown that the jumping animals are oriented in the local GMF but not after it has been compensated. This, together with the fact that Talitrus reorients in darkness to an artificial magnetic field in which magnetic North was at geographic West, completes the experimental proof that under the experimental conditions non-visual orientation in Talitrus is magnetic orientation.
