Abstract
Nature Balance, a yearly publication of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (MNP), focuses sharply on the realisation of the National Ecological Network (NEN). The NEN policy has, to date, been highly geared to quantitative objectives (e.g. amount of acquired land). The last few years, however, attention has been shifting to qualitative objectives (quality of nature). This report consists of an inventory and description of available digital spatial information on species that can be used for monitoring land as nature objective. The report also deals with the suitability and possibilities for application of the available geographical information.Research has revealed that many national and international targeted species can be monitored in the Ecological Monitoring Network, while changes in quality of large areas of land for realising nature objectives can be measured using the Monitoring Network for Function Fulfilment and the National Monitoring Network for Flora. The monitoring networks include enough measuring points to allow objectives to be achieved at national and regional levels. Smaller areas of land for realising nature objectives and specific targeted species will necessitate supplemental inventories done by organisations for nature management.
