Abstract
Flexible plastic enclosures of modest size (depth 3m, contents 1,5m-3) were used to study the diurnal variation of some phytoplankton and zooplankton parameters more than one month after enclosing the plankton. The daily variation of chlorophyll concentrations could not be interpreted readily. Uptake of nitrate and ammonia occurred mainly in the morning hours, and it was shown that the main part of primary production occurred in the afternoon. Carbon assimilation decreased strongly with depth. In the relatively small enclosured the same pattern of diurnal vertical migration of copepods was found as in the sea, indicating a natural behaviour of the copepods that had grown up in the bags.
