Abstract
    In 1979 phytoplankton populations sampled from different water bodies during different stages of phytoplankton spring bloom development were observed in an open fjord in south Norway. Within 40m deep enclosures development of phytoplankton and nutrients was measured. Natural stratification was maintained within the captured water columns. At first enclosures were filled with nutrient-rich water in which the phytoplankton increased for some days only, followed by a lag phase due to low light intensities. The same development was observed in the fjord. Then enclosures were filled with nutrient-poor water in which the phytoplankton bloom had already reached its maximum. In one enclosure remineralization processes had already started as was evidenced by increasing or stagnating concentrations of ammonia and phosphate and still decreasing concentrations of nitrate and silicate. Finally a period with a stable stratification was investigated during which no further phytoplankton growth occurred while nutrients were still available at low concentration.
