Abstract
The reproductive cycle of M. galloprovincialis Lamk. was studied in the northern Adriatic Sea from 1967 to 1971. Observations on the reproductive cycle of M. edulis L. were made in long Island Sound during the spring of 1969. The reproductive cycle of both spp was correlated with variations in the water temp. Maturation and spawning of the mussel in the Northern Adriatic Sea occurred over a great part of the year from early autumn to the end of spring and sometimes also in to the summer. The spawning season of the mussel in Long Island Sound was during May and June with only one peak in the release of gemetes.
