Abstract
The contents of the digestive tracts of specimens of Viviparus malleatus were estimated quantitatively by a volumetric method and qualitatively by using the ratio algae/other elements present. Types of algae used by these specimens were also determined. Qualitative and quantitative variations in food habits were studied in relation to size, sex, and degree of maturity of individuals, and also with habitat and seasons of the year. The quantity of food available seems to affect the population density while food quality affects growth, fecundity and production.
