| Abstract |
During 7 demersal fish surveys (M.A.F .F ., Lowestoft) 645 trawl stations were sampled. From these over 120 benthic invertebrate species have been identified, six of which are regular echinoids, four belonging to the genus Echinus and one each to the genera Cidaris and Psammechinus. Three species, Echinus elegans, E. tenuispinus and Cidaris cidaris appear to be restricted to the edge of the continental shelf. Echinus esculentus and Psammechinus miliaris are shallow water species. Psammechinus appears to be endemic to the southern North Sea whilst E. esculentus is commonest in shallow Scottish waters. Both varieties of Echinus acutus are rarely found in water shallower than 100 m, whilst var. norvegicus is most common to the east. |
