Abstract
The process is an aquacultural system which integrates proven wastewater treatment and aquacultural elements to allow great process control, high quality effluent, reduced land area and high production of competitive fish feeds. Four units are used in series to achieve primary, secondary and advanced treatment and production of fish feeds composed out of zooplankton and aquatic weeds. Four years of pilot scale demonstration have shown that it is possible to achieve reduced construction, operation and maintenance costs, minimal sludge handling, low energy demand, and low operator skill requirements. The use of a multiple series of controlled Aquatic Processing Units (APU) allows a high degree of design and operational flexibility for meeting various effluent quality and production objectives. At the latitude of Bologna (44°N), yields of 18 tonnes wet weight of zooplankton and 26 tonnes dry weight of aquatic weeds per hectare APU's per year can be obtained.
