Abstract
Primary productivity in an ongrowing tank of 450m3 in volume stocked with gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) was studied during the last stages of culture from June to December. The efficiency of a mechanical propeller aerator in reducing diel oxygen variations produced by phytoplankton populations was also studied in that same pond. Chlorophyll-a concentration in incoming water varied from 0.092 to 0.367mg.m-3; values exceeding 0.638mg.m-3 were also measured at the outflow, two peaks occurring in July and September with values of 3.998 and 4.582mg.m-3, respectively. During these peaks diel dissolved oxygen variations were great when the propeller aerator was not in operation (40-180% of DO saturation}, but decreased markedly when it was switched on (60-130% of DO saturation), the diel temperature difference being also reduced.
