Abstract
A monitoring programme was seasonally carried out in four mussel farms in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea), in 1991. Thecae of toxic dinoflagellates were detected in the stomach content of mussels using a Bürker counting chamber. The main environmental parameters were also recorded. In seawater, the Dinophysis genus was detected in June and in September and Prorocentrum was always observed and reached its maximum value in June. Their cell presence corresponded to the thecae abundance in mussel stomach content. This examination appears suitable for the assessment of toxic dinoflagellates with a strong thecae such as Dinophysis and Prorocentrum responsible for diarrhetic poisoning.
