Abstract
    Rotifer amictic egs survived cooling to -30°C (up to 38,9%) or -196°C (up to 15%). The type of cryoprotectant and its concentration affected the survival of eggs exposed to subfreezing temperatures. However, a treatment that led to high survival at -30°C didn't necessarily ensure high survival at -196°C. An increase in the number of surviving eggs was obtained by using ovigorous females from a mixed age population. Incubating rotifers with the cryoprotectant at room temperature for 30-40 min. before cooling increased the chances of survival after exposure to -196°C. Gradual dillution of the cryoprotectant following thawing slightly improved the survival of eggs cooled to -30°C. Rotifers cultured on Nannochloropsis showed more consistent results after cooling to -196°C than those cultured on Isochrysis.
