| Abstract |
In recent years the culture of the mussel (Mytilus edulis) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) has increased significantly in Prince Edward Island. This paper examines this development with particular emphasis on the local geography, environment, the problems encountered, the level of technological support, and advances being made in the industry. The growing techniques, hatchery culture, harvesting problems in winter conditions, disease control, processing, water re-use systems, brackish water wells, and marketing problems are some of the aspects discussed from the vantage point of a fisheries technologist with many years of experience. The collaborative efforts of industry with Federal and Provincial governments is illustrated as unique and made possible by the close-knit fabric of this island, which is Canada's smallest Province. This cooperation has resulted in a technological intensive-care program for the aquaculture industry with the National Research Council making a major contribution. |
