Abstract
Importations of A. anguilla in Japan started in 1968. They reached a peak 269 t in 1973 and decreased to 5,2t in 1988. Cultivation of European eel is a marginal (less than 2000t.yr-1) but a profitable activity within the eel business in Japan. Specific techniques adapted to growth potential of this species and economical constraints are employed.
