Abstract
In the summer of 1985, the density, distribution, and number of specimens of the European flat oyster ( Ostrea edulis L.) population in the Mar Menor (Murcia, SE of Spain) was studied. The sampling method was based on the direct counting of the specimens on the bottom by scuba diving. Two different sampling groups could be distinguished: a) one population settled on soft substrates, with an estimated total of 96.96x106±t13.57x106 individuals with 95% confidence intervals; 79% of these oysters had sizes equal or superior to 6cm; b) one population settled around the lagoon's islands, (on soft and hard substrata), with an estimated total of 2.70x106±0.38x106 individuals at the 95% confidence intervals. Density distribution maps (specimens.m-2) of the oyster stock, on soft substrata are presented.
