Abstract
Experiments on nitrate, ammonium, and urea uptake by the chlorphycean alga Ulva gigantea (Kutzing) Bliding were conducted in order to investigate the role played by nitrogenous nutrients upon green algae mass development. Results indicated the ability of Ulva gigantea to grow at a reduced rate over long periods of nitrogen depletion (up to 44d). Ammonium was found to be the best nitrogen source for growth, respectively followed by urea and nitrate. Uptake experiments demonstrated that ammonium and nitrate can be taken up concomitantly, while urea uptake is prevented in the presence of the two other nitrogenous nutrients tested.
