| Abstract |
S. barracuda from Wabasso Island to Bessie Cove in the Indian River were investigated. Seinging was the sole means of capture. The season of capture and food selection and an overall predator-prey relationship were compared, in addition to a general description of the food selected.S. barracuda were found to actively feed from two hours after sunrise to two hours before sunset. Schooling forms of fish constituted the majority of the barracuda's diet, with Anchoa mitchilli the major food source. The barracuda indiscriminately selects any species whose size is comparable to the preferred prey size of the barracuda. The preferred prey size is determined by the mouth length of the barracuda. S. barracuda feed on prey smaller than its mouth length due to the high abundance of prey available to the barracuda. |
