| Abstract |
The prospects of aquaculture business in the Philippines are bright. Bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) has an estimated net profit of US $ 1.4 million, US $ 0.14 million operating costs, and estimated gross revenues of US $ 1.5 million from sales. The processing of bighead carps by C.D. Aparri Enterprise, covers fish oil extraction which is used further in manufacturing pure soap "Batis". Plans were formulated to manufacture livestock feed appetizers from left-over fish bones, fish-fillet meat extenders from fish muscle, and liquefied hormonal fertilizers from the fish organs. The other aqua-ventures are: sea farming of oysters and mussels, prawns and shrimp with milkfish in brackish water ponds, and tilapia, milkfish, and carps in freshwater lakes. Based on all financial and economic indicators, as well as prevailing geographical and institutional factors, the Philippine archipelago is rapidly becoming the spin-off point of the aquaculture revolution in the developing tropical world. |
