Abstract
A theoretical basis for surface coagulation of particles of colloidal size is proposed. Experiments conducted with a bubble column demonstrate the production of aggregates, and suggest the presence of bacteria on aggregates is an effect and not a cause of aggregation. While the process is real, its quantitative importance in particulate production in the ocean is still not known.
