A detailed analysis of short- and long-term time records of 13C analyses on athmospheric CO2 provides insight in aspects of the global carbon cycle that cannot be obtained otherwise. The aim of this paper is to present a review of stable carbon isotope effects and variations in nature, and to discuss the theoretical background as well as applications regarding the CO2 increase.
