Abstract
    Turbulence measurements with a laser-doppler velocimeter system in a tidally mixed unstratified shelf sea were compared with turbulence properties derived from a model based on the balance equation of turbulent kinetic energy and the eddy viscosity assumption. This comparison showed that reasonable predictions of the vertical structure of the turbulence in a tidally-mixed shelf sea can be made from measurements of water-current speed and wind speed. The model provides an estimate of the bottom drag coefficient Cd. This estimate is based upon measurements in the outer layer of the water column in contrast to the usual Cd values derived from the roughness-lengths obtained from extrapolations of the logarithmic velocity profiles close to the bottom. In an additional experiment the turbulence was measured in a water column with a growing benthic boundary layer just after the turn of the tide. The model derived from the first experiment is used to estimate the growth speed of the turbulent benthic boundary layer.
