Abstract
Measurements were carried out of calcium concentration, alkalinity and total carbon dioxide. These data were used to calculate the degree of saturation of calcium carbonate in the east Indonesian deep-sea basins, with respect to calcite, and carbonate dissolution. Changes in total CO2 are compared with changes in oxygen content and used to calculate organic matter decomposition. It is concluded that, notwithstanding the very short residence times of water masses, distinct concentration changes occur.
