| Abstract |
Eastern Indonesia is considered grossly underexplored from an oil exploration standpoint. Although some 200 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, this region still provides a great challenge for future significant discoveries. Structural and stratigraphic trapping models and geochemical data on eastern Sulawesi, Seram and Irian Jaya indicate possibilities for exploration plays within Tertiary and Mesozoic rock formations. Due to the region's remoteness and less developed infrastructure, exploration for hydrocarbons is relatively expensive. Assessment of hydrocarbon potentials and a more efficient workprogram to discover additional reserves in the region will, therefore, principally be guided by future research on marine seismic, geohistory analysis of onshore geology and remote sensing. |
