Abstract
Systematic sampling along three traverses across the Banda Arc has resulted in the recognition of distinct litho- and biofacies for each of the structural units and their corresponding watermasses. Position of th lysocline and CCD have been determined at 1700 and 3300 m respectively. The distribution of planktonic organisms (Foraminifera, radiolaria and calcareous nannoplankton) is related to the prevailing monsoon direction. Bathymetric trends are revealed by benthic Foraminifera and ostracods.
