Abstract
The analysis of the composition of insoluble organic matter of 31 samples taken in a transect through the northern Banda Sea and Seram Sea resulted in the distinction of twelve grain types, characterized by combinations of textural properties. The quantity of each grain type, expressed as a percentage of the total of the insoluble organic matter of each sample, is variable. In this transect four palynofacies types were recognized and related to different depositional environments. An interpretation of the increase in concentration from west to east is given here. Special attention was paid to a particular type, viz. the palynomorphs, a category which includes discrete identifiable elements (e.g. algae, spores, pollen grains). The ratio between the occurrence of foraminiferal inner linings and a recognizable, not identified particle is related to water depth.
