Abstract
The relationship between growth increment in the year preceding spawning, condition at spawning time and fecundity was examined using soles collected from the North Sea and eastern English Channel. The growth increment of individual fish was compared with the fecundity estimated separately for each fish. Significant differences in fecundity were found between areas and across years. Variation in fecundity was explained largely by weight or combination of length and condition index at spawning time. Growth increment did not significantly improve the model. The results suggest that soles that feed and grow well can increase their absolute fecundity since this is determined by their overall size. However, the proportion of energy allocated to egg production remains much the same as in individuals which have grown less well. Further work is needed to explain the observed differences in fecundity at length between years and regions.
