Abstract
The investigation of successional dynamics in marine soft-bottom habitats has proceeded via several different approaches (models) reflecting and emphasizing different areas of ecological theory. These can be broadly generalized as (a) the environmental approach, (b) the life history approach, and (c) the biotic interaction approach. Our aim is to construct a model of soft-bottom succession which draws upon and integrates these three approaches. The integration proceeds by acknowledging a hierarchical structure to successional dynamics, in which one level of organization or interaction sets the boundary conditions for the next level of interaction via information flow. As examples we show how the effect of biotic interaction on the successional process may be mediated by changes in water flow and how life histories of colonizing species may affect the specific form of biotic interaction controlling successional change.
