Abstract |
The role of bivalve populations in the circulation of matter was studied in Mikolajskie Lake where the bivalves were represented by 3 main groups: Unionidae, Sphaeriidae and Dreissens polymorpha. It was found that the filtration rate for Unionidae ranged from 60-490 ml/ind./h and for D. polymorpha from l0-100m1/ind./h. Food consumption of Unionidae averaged 21 mg/ind./h and for D. polymorpha 2.6 mg/ind./h. The average faeces production for D. polymorpha was 1.6 mg/ind./h. It was calculated that the population of D. polymorpha can filter 53 millions m3 water per season (6 months). Unionidae filter {approx} 0.9 millions m3 . |
