Abstract
Interspecific and intraspecific (for age and sex) differences are studied in the intertidal sibling species Littorina obtusata (L.) and L. mariae Sacchi & Rast. (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia) in regard to their eurythermy. Experiments were carried out at Roscoff, Northern Brittany, in Summer 1970. Resistance to high temperatures (both in aquatic and sub-aerial media) and to low ones was tested. L. obtusata shows a higher thermic valence. This may match its higher resistance to desiccation, previously demonstrated (Sacchi, 1969) to explain its typical zonation on the shore at a level above that of L. mariae. In both species young individuals are not significantly less resistant than adults, while females show a better resistance to high temperatures, a slightly worse one for low temperatures than males.
