Abstract
DesanS for Défi Santé Stylirostris health challenge, in French, was a multidisciplinary research project which aimed to understand what caused two syndromes affecting the development of shrimp farming in New Caledonia and to propose solutions to ensure this activity's sustainability. The main conclusion drawn is that the syndromes are triggered due to a disruption in the balance between the shrimp and pathogens present. This disruption is caused by the simultaneous or offset action of environmental components on them. In order to re-establish the balance, it is necessary to maintain both the « ecological comfort » and « physiological comfort » of the animals. Maintaining the «pond environment» through better mastery of animal husbandry techniques, feed enriched with probiotics or immunostimulants which act on the animal's resistance, using better quality subjects which may be slightly or not at all consanguineous, obtained by crossbreeding or selection, are all solutions which can interact to this end.Beyond the specific case of New Caledonian shrimp farming, the programme showed that in situ and experimental studies of the interactions between pathogens, the animal and the environment are required, if we want to understand these diseases and find remedies.
