A digital picture downloaded from the website based on the thesis of Fran Van Heuverswyn (University Gent, Belgium, 2000). It situates the state nature reserve of ‘De Westhoek’ on a topographic map (source: topographic maps 1978 (19/3-4) and 1985 (11/7-8) of the National Geographic Institute). 1 = state nature reserve ‘De Westhoek’; 2 = allotment Westhoek (Vissersdorp); 3 = dunes ‘zeereepduinen’ De Panne; 4 = ‘Calmeynbos’ and dunes (water collection area); 5 = dunes ‘Oosthoekduinen’; 6 = sandy beach; 7 = camp site ‘le Perroquet’; 8 = dunes ‘Dunes du perroquet’ in France; 9 = polder; 10 = domain ‘Cabourg’; 11 = dunes ‘Fossiles de Ghyvelde’; 12 = state nature reserve ‘Houtsaeger’The dunes of ‘De Westhoek’ are situated in the outermost western part of the province West-Vlaanderen, on the territory of the municipality of De Panne. By a K.B. of 29 August 1957 340 ha of the area received the status of nature reserve. In the northern the state nature reserve ‘De Westhoek’ is separated from the sandy beach by a concrete dyke. At the north eastern side lies the outparceled dune area ‘Vissersdorp’ (approximately 60 ha). The ‘Calmeynbos’, possessed by the water collecting company I.W.V.A., borders the eastern side of the reserve. In the south the Duinhoekstraat forms a natural border between dunes and polder, while the western border is formed by the French border. Across the border the dunes are continuing into the reserve ‘Dunes du Perroquet’ of 225 ha
