Abstract
On a transect from onshore to 28 miles offshore in the Ligurian sea, the spatial distribution of the salp Salpa fusiformis is not random. In April, the proportion of oozoid stage is high close to the coast. In offshore waters, young blastozoids are dominant. The observed distribution of the different stages may be explained if development of salps in coastal waters is not in phase with development in offshore waters. The second salp species which was present in the samples, Thalia democratica, was restricted to coastal waters.
