Abstract
Measurements of pH and alcalinity have been carried out in two brackish lakes related to French Mediterranean Sea and compared with that of four river outlets and nearby seawater. The variations of pH are larger in brackish waters than in seawater and freshwater. Seasonal variations of pH depend on phytoplankton blooms. Values of pH are generally similar at 0 and 4m, but different at 7m. The estimates of pH ranged from 7.6 to 8.7 in Etang de Berre (average: 8. 30), from 7.9 to 8.4 in marine water (average 8. 13) and from 7.6 to 8.4 in freshwater (average 7.98). The values of alcalinity from two brackish stations ranged from 2.54 to 3.36mEq.P with a weighted average of 2.85mEq.I-l. They decrease during warm season. when the flow of freshwater is very low.
