Abstract
Some aspects of the fascinating process of dune erosion because of a severe storm surge are described. The loss of dune area is the most striking effect of this process. Loss of dune area is ultimately also possible because of structural erosion; the differences between dune erosion and structural erosion are discussed. Computational models to assess the rate of dune erosion during a storm surge are briefly discussed. Methods to reduce or overcome the problems associated with dune erosion are discussed. A plea is made for a proper coastal zone management system.
