Abstract |
A new genus and three new species belonging to the family Cystiscidae Stimpson, 1865 from the Indian Ocean are here described: Paolaura gen. nov., P. maldivensis sp. nov., P. kenyaensis sp. nov. and P. semistriata sp. nov. The new taxa are described on the basis of shell morphology only. Shells of Paolaura gen. nov. are similar in shape to the genus Granulina Jousseaume, 1888, but these are clearly distinguishable by having three striking features: a) a strong spiral sculpture partly or totally covering the teleoconch surface; b) a microsculpture all along the shell aperture, covering labrum and rostra; c) the presence of a labial varix. The spiral striae observed at high magnification by SEM reveal a peculiar structure, never before observed in shells of this family. |
