    Seventy-one species of the Desmoscolecida are described and figured in this study, of which 6 genera and 43 species are new to science. The general characteristics and evolution of the order are discussed and keys to the larger genera are provided. The following genera are new: Dema-nema, Protodesmoscolex, Prototricoma, Protricoma, Protricomoides, and Progreeffiella. The following species are new: Calligyrus stokesi, Desmoscolex bathybius, D. californicus, D. cosmopolites, D. dracone-moides, D. gerlachi, D. gladisetosus, D. italicus, D. longiamphis, D. longisetosus, D. max, D. quadrico-moides, D. renifer, D. rostratus, D. velifer, Demanema cobbi, D. deuterum, Eudesmoscolex californicus, Progreeffiella simPlex, Protodesmoscolex antarcticos, Proto-tricoma longicauda, Protricoma squamosa, Protricomoides squamosus, Quadricoma bahamaensis, Q. crassicauda, Q. crassicomoides, Q. desmoscolecoides, Q. longicauda, Q. magna, Q. parva, Q. trigintatres, Tricoma absidata, T. amydramphida, T. antarctica, T. denticulata, T. fisheri, T. globocapitata, T. hopperi, T. lucida, T. megamphida, T. pedunculata, T. perpar-vula, and T. rostrata. The following new combinations are established: Prodesmoscolex lanuginosus (=Desmoscolex lanuginosus), Protricoma laciniosa (=Paratricoma laciniosa), Protricoma papillifer (=Paratricoma papillifer), Protricoma pratensis (= Paratricoma pratensis), Q. eurycrica (=D. frontalis), Q. hupferi (=D. hupferi), Q. maxima (=D. maximus), Q. scanica (=D. scanicus), Q. vittata (=D. vittatus), T. bascescui (=D. bascescui), and T. strandi (=D. strandi).
