Abstract
Eggs of Nucella lapillus were collected from a sheltered locality in Bretagne, and from sheltered, intermediate, and exposed localities in Norway. Males were collected from three other localities in Norway. The chromosome number in eggs from the locality in Bretagne was found to be n = 18, and in eggs from all the localities in Norway n = 13. In the males the chromosome number was determined in spermatocytes and found to be n = 13. The distribution of the chromosome forms in relation to the wave exposure is discussed. It is concluded that factors other than the wave exposure alone may account for the distribution of the two chromosome forms.
