Abstract
The metamorphosis of the prosobranchs with food eggs for the embryos is complicated and delayed compared with the primitive type. The development of the radula begins in the second half of the larval period. The transformation of the macromeres into midgut-cells is arrested, the digestion of their vitelline platelets is postponed. In Buccinum the midgut produces a special vesicle where the vitellus is digested. The epithelium of this vesicle shows no secretion; the enzymes for the digestion of the vitelline substances must come from the midgut. The accumulation of a huge mass of food eggs in the larval gut provides a source of nourishment without any intake from outside and assures thus the non-functional period for the stomodeum necessary for the transformation of the pharynx in a complicate retractile proboscis.
