Abstract |
In intensive marine hatcheries there are many rearing conditions that may reduce the quality of the reared fish, compared with that of the wild. These may result in the absence of a swimbladder (Paperna, 1978), osteological and morphological malformations (Marino et al., 1993), and variations in body pigmentation (Gartner, 1986), all of which can directly affect the market value of the product and result in inferior growth performances and survival rates (Paperna, 1978; Chatain, 1987). As a result, they have important implications for production management with regard to market forces, and the profitability of the enterprise. Therefore, the definition of explicit criteria for the early and effective evaluation of a production cycle and of the product quality, is of great importance. |
