Abstract
Human activity is challenging our oceans´ ecosystems. Overfishing, pollution, coastal degradation and other threats are putting thousands of marine species under threat. European researchers are searching the depths to understand the risks, so that they can provide better solutions. From deep-water corals off Scotland to endangered whales and dolphins off Sicily. From unknown bacteria on underwater volcanoes in Eastern Mediterranean to disminishing stocks of “sardinella” off the Senegalese coast. A special Futuris gets a glimpse of how European researchers are trying to assess the oceans of tomorrow.
