Abstract
Thin-layer chromatography and mass spectrometry have been used to study orange and yellow precursors of the purple dye (shellfish purple) obtained from Nucella lapillus (Linnaeus, 1758). The composition of the dye has been determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a synthesis of 6,6'-dibromoindirubin used to confirm one of the components. Suggestions are made about the nature of the transient blue colour observed in the production of the purple.
