Abstract
A morphological investigation of the marine, Oligocene to Miocene fossil Synedra jouseana has been undertaken. This species cannot remain in the genus Synedra and appears to be similar to Thalassionema and Thalassiothrix. However, it differs from both by the possession of deep longitudinal valvar canals that penetrate the mantle edge and a distinctive furrowed sternum. Hence it is placed in a new genus. Its relationships within the araphid diatoms are briefly discussed.
