Abstract
Holocene fossil diatom assemblages in a core taken in the more seaward part of the western Belgian coastal plain, and close to two major former tidal channels, are discussed. The bulk of the taphocoenoses consists of easily transported tychoplanktonic and sessile species (mainly Cymatosira belgica and Rhaphoneis minutissima). The contribution of epipelon of strictly local origin becomes considerable only when high-intertidal deposits are reached. Shifts in assemblage composition and local palaeoenvironment are closely linked to the lateral development of the channel systems, and it is likely that events recorded at this site are linked to phenomena of more regional importance. At least this appears to be the case for events occurring in the periods 6500-6000 and 4230-3830 cal BP.
